Joan Schenkar is the author of the highly acclaimed literary biography The Talented Miss Highsmith: The Secret Life and Serious Art of Patricia Highsmith. She edited and introduced Patricia Highsmith: Selected Novels and Short Stories, wrote the Highsmith chapter for The Cambridge Companion to American Novelists, and is currently composing the introduction to the Virago Master Classics re-publication of all Highsmith’s works in the United Kingdom. Joan is also the author of the widely praised biography of Dolly Wilde, Oscar Wilde’s niece: Truly Wilde.
As a playwright, Joan has won more than forty awards and fellowships and had over five hundred productions of her theatre pieces worldwide, and is the author of the play collection Signs of Life: Six Comedies of Menace. She is invited to speak about her writing at literary festivals, universities, libraries and private functions throughout North America and Europe.
Joan lives in — and writes about — Paris and Greenwich Village.
