Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has lived in the USA since 1981. She is the author of the novels The Perfect Place, The House on R Street, Cracks, The Children of Pithiviers, Crossways, Bluebird or the Invention of Happiness, Becoming Jane Eyre, Love Child and Dreaming for Freud. She has twice won the O’Henry Prize for her stories “The Mountain” 1988 and “The Transitional Object” 2008. Kohler has taught at SUNY Purchase, Sarah Lawrence, Colgate, CCNY and Bennington. She now teaches at Princeton and Columbia.
